It was right after supper when everyone's bellies were full and everyone relaxed to chat and hang out together. Frank hand rested underneath his chin as he stared into space. The ceiling in the Great Hall reflected the weather outside, and tonight that was sparse, gently falling snow flakes. Frank was almost transfixed by them, lost in his thoughts. Then there was a loud obnoxious noise from across the table. "Oi Frankie! Bloody hell I've been waiting ages! It's your turn!" Frank snapped back to reality to observe one of his mates barking at him from across the Gryffindor table. The two of them were currently immersed in a game of wizard's chess. Of course, by now all of the food had been cleared away and other students were taking part in similar leisurely activities, or just talking amongst themselves.
Frank looked down at the chess board, contemplating his next move. Within seconds he had already decided what his move would be. As captain of the chess team, it was an understatement to say that Frank was a talented chess player. He had practically mastered the game. He only wished he could be so gifted in something that was much more impressive to the opposite sex, such as quidditch or duelling. Something like that would probably be much more impressive to... say... Alice Logan, he reckoned. He humored his friend by biting the nail on his finger as though deep in thought. He didn't want to make it look like he was winning too easily. But his friend folded his arms, not impressed. He knew Frank had bested him already. Frank called out the instructions for his chess piece. The queen piece magically slide across the board and began attacking his friend's rook piece rather dramatically. His friend looked on at the scene with a rather annoyed expression on his face. He realized the fate of their game.
"Checkmate," Frank said disinterestedly. His mind was constantly drifting this evening. "Bugger, again?!" his friend exclaimed annoyed, his eyes darting across the board trying to figure out where he had went wrong. They had already played two matches now and Frank grew bored. "Camon, mate, best of three?" his friend requested, wanting another go at wizard's chess. As much as he didn't want to play again, he really had nothing better to do. He was finished all of his assignments for the week, early, as usual. Frank groaned, his dark eyes looking around the Great Hall in desperation for some distraction that could take him away from another game of chess. If only someone would interrupt them and keep them from starting up yet another game.

Sometimes the ceiling of the Great Hall was just plain creepy. Lily thought she almost felt like going back to her room and putting on a sweater under her robes because just the look of the snow made her cold. She knew that any cold she felt was probably just because the castle was so big and drafty, though not as much as you'd think it was with the size of it and the fact that they didn't have electricity to make heat. The girl shrugged off her cold and tried to pay attention to what people around her were saying. The girl next to her was saying that it was high time Lily smartened up and stopped hanging out with that Snape kid. The red-headed girl had to bite her tongue to keep from yelling that she'd stopped hanging out with Severus the previous year due to him calling her a Mudblood. The thought of that incident still stung. Lily had been trying to help out. So much for them being friends forever.
The girl who sat across from her was asking about Defense Against the Dark Arts. They'd been assigned homework – homework that Lily had already completed even though it wasn't due for another two days. Actually, all of her homework was done. It made Lily wonder if she should drag it out sometimes just to keep from getting bored, but she figured things would always come up, whether it was something with the Slug Club or helping out a younger student since she was a prefect, Lily thought there would always be something to do and she wanted to make sure her school work was completed so she'd have time to do those other things.
Her eyes drifted to where the group of boys that caused her the most trouble would be. Potter and his crew weren't exactly ones to go by the rules and Lily had gotten accustomed to making sure they weren't doing anything too terrible. As if she could ever make sure of such a thing. Anyway, she sat a little straighter when she realized that they weren't in the place she expected them to be. But as she looked around the room she did spot another person who looked like he could use a friendly face. He was sitting across from someone else, playing wizard's chess it looked like. Big surprise, wasn't Frank Longbottom captain of the team? Lily looked at her friends and gave them a smile, “Excuse me, I just remembered, I have to ask Frank something. I'll see you girls later.” She gave them a wave and headed in the direction of Frank, who was also her friend. He looked like he needed a way out of beating the ever loving crap out of his friend in another game of chess.
Lily sat down next to Frank, hands flat on the table, her face in an expression of mock worry. “Oh my gosh, Frank, thank Merlin I found you. I need your help with a bit of homework.” It was most definitely a lie, but Lily pulled some parchment and a quill out of her bag anyway and set it on the table, hoping it was enough to get him out of whatever he dreaded doing. Lily's homework was done, but she did study with Frank sometimes, so it wouldn't have been completely unbelievable for her to go to him to just check on their accuracy.

Just as Frank's friend waved his wand to reset the chess board, Frank seemed to be saved by a ginger angel. He saw a flash of bright red hair sit down next to him. Lily Evans... and requesting help with homework? Frank stared perplexed for a moment. He was unbelievably gullible at times, but he certainly found it difficult to believe that Lily Evans of all people would need help with her homework. Perhaps it was just that she wanted to compare answers with him, as they often did, but the hasty dramatic nature of her entrance almost seemed like she actually did need some assistance. Frank didn't believe it was true, Lily was just far too bright a witch, but either way he was not about to start complaining. She had just saved him for more dreary chess matches that were likely to go on for what felt like ages.
Frank suddenly brightened at the prospect that she recognized he needed a little bailing out. Hey Lily, well of course I'll help you, Frank said cheerfully. His friend eyed them both suspiciously, knowing very well that both Frank and Lily were very clever and rarely needed help with anything pertaining to school work. Frank's friend admitted defeat as he started to pack up the chess board. Sorry, mate, we'll resume later, Frank mentioned, turning to his friend. He sincerely hoped in actuality that he would not be subjected to resume their matches later. His friend got up mumbling "yeah, yeah," and took his board and pieces elsewhere perhaps to pester another Gryffindor chess club member to play a match with him.
Frank turned back to Lily. I thought he'd never leave, Frank said exasperatedly grateful. Thanks Lil... You don't actually need help with your homework do you? Frank said with a small chuckle. He didn't think she would, but he should at least be polite enough to check with her. After all, one of their assignments this week in Defence Against the Dark Arts had been particularly challenging, and that was always Frank's best subject. 'Cause if you do, I of course don't mind helping.
He also had no issue with helping other people with their assignments. It was better than when he sometimes got bullied into actually doing assignments for other people. Mind you, that hadn't happened yet this year. Frank was much braver in sticking up for himself this year. Sticking up for other people and getting his butt kicked for them was never an issue for Frank and in fact he enthusiastically took the burden upon himself if it meant helping a friend, but this year he was certainly trying to stand up for himself more often.

Relief flooded through her as the person who had been unknowingly torturing Frank got up and left, though Lily didn't think he was completely convinced that she needed help with homework. Well, he'd be right on that account. While she did like to compare answers to make sure she'd thought everything through (she was nothing if not thorough), she rarely needed actual help on something a teacher assigned. Usually, if a teacher assigned something, it would be something an average student could handle. Lily was known for being a bit brighter than the average student, though she had no distaste for average grades or helping people to reach better marks. She didn't think of herself as better than them, just more disciplined when it came to focusing on getting her work done. And she didn't mind comparing answers with people who wanted help on their homework, as long as helping was all she was doing.
She watched the person walk off with the chess board. She wouldn't have minded if he decided to stay, but watching a game of chess wasn't high on Lily's to-do list. She had nothing against chess, in fact, it was one of the games she acknowledged as helping the mind rather than possibly hindering it, but she didn't always find watching a game of chess enthralling. Especially if Frank was playing. She'd be the first to encourage him to do what he wanted, but she knew enough about him to know that he was really rather good at the board game. Lily looked at her friend and gave him a shrug and a smile. “You looked like you could use a break from winning. I swear I thought you were going to just levitate right out of your seat staring off into space like that.” To her knowledge, there weren't many people, if any, who could just levitate, but she meant it as a compliment as well as a statement to how he'd obviously been looking for a reprieve.
“No, I don't really need help with homework.” She looked down at the parchment that already had her completed Charms work on it. “But we can go over the answers for the classes we have together later if you'd like. Maybe Defense Against the Dark Arts. It was a little tricky this time but I'm fairly certain that I've met its requirements.” She gave him a smile and started putting the homework back into her bag, but putting the bag on the table in case Frank's friend looked over and saw she'd been lying. That wasn't something Lily did a lot, or was even relatively good at most of the time. She was sure her fake look of worry when she first got there would have given her away, but she'd apparently pulled it off well enough. Or maybe most people just didn't think that Lily would lie to them. It was just a little fib, she justified. “But you did look like you needed a break and I definitely needed one. I can only stand hearing the same thing over and over so many times. So I thought, two birds, one stone. How many games did you play anyway?”
