It was cold, though admittedly that was to be expected. The winter season wasn't known for being warm. It was, however, one of the warmer days. Not that that meant much. Winter was winter. Lily didn't mind winter so much, she just missed warmer weather. It seemed such a shame to waste a considerably beautiful day, though. The sun was out and there wasn't any snow on the ground. Surprisingly, the Black Lake wasn't frozen over. The water was almost always cold anyway and it was weird that even such a large body of water could stay unfrozen. The red-headed girl made her way out to the lake, her bag loaded with books and school supplies. She had debated on staying inside but she wanted to make use of the sun while it still lasted. Besides, the Common Room was noisy today, it being the weekend and all, and the Library was crowded with fifth years, most of them looked like Ravenclaws, possibly getting a head start on their studying for O.W.L.s. That was definitely an activity Lily could get behind, since she'd started studying rather early last year for her exams, but she didn't want to be in a place so crowded.
So the Black Lake it was. There were definitely people outside enjoying the sort of temporary weather break; Lily could see people running around or sitting in groups on her way to the body of water, but she chose a place away from people this time. Lily didn't mind being social, but sometimes a little quiet was nice. Though her bag was packed with several school items, what she pulled out wasn't a text book. Instead it was a printed version of a Shakespearean play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. In an odd way it was still educational. Lily had found out over the summer that this was on the muggle reading list for people her age that went to regular schools.
So far, she thought the play was just silly. Oh the writing was wonderful, but there was so much going on as far as plot and some of the characters just sounded like children. As she continued to read, though, she found that it wasn't completely a waste of time. She was thoroughly into the first Act when she realized that her head was beginning to hurt from reading so long. She pulled out a piece of parchment and tore a little piece from it, sticking the piece in between the pages of the play to mark her place. I should really start carrying around a bookmark,” she couldn't help but think.
She let the paperback play rest at her side and pulled her knees to her chest to watch the water for a little while. After watching for a few minutes she could have swore she saw a merperson surface, but she had to have been mistaken. They didn't often come up to the surface and she didn't think that they would while there were students out, unless maybe they wanted to see if they could scare someone. Maybe she'd mistaken a merperson's fin for a tentacle of the Giant Squid. That would make more sense, she decided. She soon lost herself in her thoughts.

Nor was it the cheeriest of them. In fact, if James had to give his opinion, it was one of the dreariest. If he hadn’t known any better, he’d say that the Dementors were loose from Azkaban and were with You-Know-Who. Lord Voldemort. James gritted his teeth together slightly as he thought of that man. He was striking fear into the hearts of every witch and wizard out there. There were only a few people willing to fight him, a few willing to risk their life. James’s parents weren’t one of them. But then again, they were too old to do anything like that. They couldn’t go about running around and fighting the Death Eaters.
James’s gaze drifted over the Black Lake, towards the Castle on the other side of the vast body of water. The Giant Squid was basking in the water a few feet away from him in the shallows. If he’d wanted to, he could have reached out and touched one of its tentacles. However, that would require getting wet, and James had no desire to get his Robes wet. Nope, maybe on another day when it was warmer out, but certainly not today. His mind drifted over that word again. Death Eaters. He rolled the word over and over in his head again, while he picked up a pebble, running its smooth surface over in his hand. They were just people, people like him, or Sirius, or McGonagall . . . hell, even just like Peter. What gave them the right to do what they did? Their precious blood status? He glared slightly at the castle, throwing the pebble in his hand at its direction. He could name a few people up in those walls that were all for the Death Eater’s views.
One name jumped out clear to him as he sat there. Severus Snape. And how would he know this? Just look at the creeps that slime ball hung out with. Lestrange, Avery, Nott, Mulciber. All of them Death Eaters or future ones. He knew for a fact that the Lestranges were just Death Eaters waiting to happen… along with Bellatrix. And Mulciber . . . he was just a creep who needed to have his ass handed to him. James hoped that he could be the one to do it. But mostly, he wanted to beat in Snape’s face.
He had always hated the Slytherin. Since the first time the two met on the Hogwarts Express, they’d been out for each other’s neck. Sure, if Snape wasn’t up to his eye balls in the Dark Arts, then maybe he could have given him a chance. But he ruined it last year when he called Lily a ‘Mudblood’. His thoughts drifted to the fiery red-head. A small sigh escaped him as he smiled slightly at the thought of her. Merlin did he love her. But she seemed to think he was only joking when he told her. He’d defended her last year when Snape had called her a You-know-What. And what had she done? Yelled at him. It wasn’t fair. Nothing about how Lily treated him was fair. But that didn’t matter. He was going to ignore her. He was done chasing her. He’d sworn to himself at the beginning of the Term that he wouldn’t chase after her. His heart had been shattered one too many times. It was time he tried to mend the pieces and moved one, no matter how impossible it seemed. | [atrb=width,100] words ,

A constant stream of thoughts kept Lily company. Maybe she should go inside and study, but there really wasn't anything she needed to study for right now. She could always do some preparation for next years NEWT exams, but if she was on top of her work now there didn't seem to be any reason that she wouldn't be on top of her work next year too. Besides, she had all summer to prepare at least for the theoretical portions of the exams. Maybe she should go and see if any of the fifth years needed help studying for their OWLs, but on second thought, Lily was almost positive that she was one of the very few people (or at least Gryffindors) who started studying for exams this early. Most people thought there was loads of time left, or that if you did well in the classes you'd do well on the exams. The time thing wasn't true and the doing well in classes equaled doing well on the exams wasn't always true either. Lily knew that there were people who copied homework and such. She wasn't one of them, but she didn't have to be either. She compared answers to Frank sometimes just to see if they came up with the same thing, but that was about as far as that went.
She kept her eyes on the water and watched the Giant Squid. She almost laughed, remembering a time when she had told James that she wouldn't go out with him if it was between him and the squid. Looking back she didn't really think she'd meant it. Oh, James Potter was annoying and a bit egotistical in her opinion, but at least he was her species... maybe. Maybe not. Perhaps one day he'd sprout a horn from the top of his head and turn into a unicorn.
Speaking of the devil, Lily glanced to her side and she had to do a double take. There he was, sitting near the lake, just like she was, a little ways away. Had he noticed her yet? If she got up and just took off she could sneak away without having to deal with him. Then again, Lily realized she hadn't seen a whole lot of Potter so far this term. What was up with that? She continued to watch him for a minute and realized something else that was odd: Potter was alone. It was just strange. Potter seemed to always be surrounded by Remus, Sirius, and Peter. Most of the time Lily thought he seemed like their leader, though she was quite certain that they could think for themselves. Remus especially. She noticed that her fellow Prefect didn't always take part in the teasing of others.
Lily gave a frustrated sigh. Her curiosity was getting the better of her. She picked up her book, stood up, and threw her bag strap over her shoulder before walking over to Potter and sitting down. The red-haired girl tilted her head and studied the boy for a minute, trying to figure out if something was wrong. Something had to be wrong. He was alone and not causing trouble. Maybe he was planning on starting something and was just waiting for his friends. “Are you ill?” It probably sounded like a stupid question, but Lily thought she better find out what was going on.

s h o u ld i g i v e u p o r s h o u l d i just keep chasing pavements even though it
[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,10,true][atrb=style,background-image: url('http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Juliart/background_black.jpg');,true][cs=2] L E A D S T O N O W H E R E | [atrb=width,240] James was brought out of his little thoughts about a certain red head by the Giant Squid. It and managed to sneak one of its tentacles up the rock he was perched atop. He smiled slightly, shifting his weight so that he could reach over and tickle it. The tentacle shuddered slightly as if in delight before slipping back off into the cold water.
“Yeah, you better get back in there.” he said happily.
Of course, there was no threat in his voice. What reason did he have to threaten the squid? It was playful, and it minded its own business. Actually, James was pretty sure that it enjoyed the company of the students. It had to be boring with all the merpeople to spend time with every day; year in and year out. Of course, he really had no clue as to what the merpeople did in their spare time – or any of their time – so perhaps the Giant Squid just looked for some different company every now and again. Feeling eyes on him, James made a quick look around, pretending as if he was boredly looking at the landscape; his gaze passing over one interesting individual. Lily Evans. Had she noticed him sitting there? Perhaps not, otherwise he didn’t think she would still be there. It really wasn’t a surprise that she hadn’t noticed him – if that was indeed the case. Evans normally made it a habit of pretending he didn’t exist.
‘That’s fine. I can play her game as well. She’d be glad if I’m not around, happy even.’ he thought to himself. Even with his resolve to ignore her set into his head, he had to fight the urge to turn back to look at her. Instead, he forced his attention back on the Giant Squid, which had decided to drift off elsewhere in the lake. ‘Thanks for nothing,’ he bitterly thought towards it. Instead, he decided to take out a book and read it, or at least pretend to read it. Animagi… Professor McGonagall had let slip that they would be taking a refresher course just to see how much had remembered everything they had gone over in their third year. More likely it was to see who had gone above and beyond to do extra reading on it.
Not that he really needed to open a book to know anything about it. It helped that he’d been studying the subject – silently and without any Professor knowledge of course – since he and the others had discovered Remus’ secret. It had taken the better part of five years to actually accomplish the feat, but accomplish it they had. Hearing the rustling of clothing coming nearer to him, he quickly looked up over the rims of his glasses. An incredibly blurry figure was approaching him. A blurry figure with red hair and – even though he couldn’t see them without looking through his glasses properly – almond shaped green eyes. Just like Emeralds.
Damn… why was she coming over here? He wasn’t doing anything to her. He would have figured she’d be pleased with that. He continued to ignore her, instead returning his attention to the admittedly boring book that sat in his lap. He turned a page, only reading parts of the book he had underlined or circled – tips or instructions he had found useful for his own ability – before viewing the illustrations on the page and then turning it.
He blinked, slowly bringing his gaze up to look at her at her question: a confused expression written plainly on his features. What? was written all over him. And if it wasn’t, it really ought to be branded in big, bold letters across his forehead. “No… May I ask why you’re asking about my health?”

For reasons Lily couldn't explain (and it bugged her to no end that she couldn't explain them), she couldn't find it in herself to just go back to the castle. She told herself that it was because she was a prefect and she needed to know why James was acting differently. Differently didn't always mean bad, but it didn't always mean good either. She told herself she wanted to know what the drastic change in his behavior (the whole not talking to her unless necessary and the decrease in the times he'd asked her out) was about. If it had happened gradually, maybe Lily would have understood. Instead, she'd went away her fifth year and came back to her sixth to a changed Potter. Or at least one who hadn't interacted with her as much. She told herself her curiosity was definitely not because she was sad that he'd stopped pestering her. She should be glad that he wasn't speaking to her as much. So she told herself that she needed to know what was going on for the safety of the school. If she didn't examine it too much, she could almost trick her brain into thinking she was just keeping tabs on Potter because it was better for everyone if she could stop whatever he and his crew were doing or planning on doing.
On the other hand, he wasn't with his friends, which gave her the theory about him being sick. But if he was sick, he really should be in his dormitory or in the hospital wing. Not that she thought James would be sensible enough to do that. She hoped that he'd have enough sense to stay inside if he was sick, but she couldn't come up with another explanation for him being out here alone. Lily hardly ever saw him a part from his mates. She should have just walked back to the castle and asked Remus if he knew what was going on, but that would mean admitting that she cared what James did... which she didn't, she kept telling herself. She just wanted to know what sort of chaos to expect next. But that wouldn't be how Remus would see it. And he'd probably tease her, not in a mean way of course, about it. She wasn't even ready to admit to herself that she was concerned about whatever James did. She'd been keeping an eye on him for years, but she told herself it was because he always caused trouble – she had to keep an eye on him if she didn't want him to play one of his tricks on her. In fact, it occurred to her that maybe not asking her out recently and not speaking to her as much was a trick. Well, she was going to be prepared for it... whatever it was.
The red-headed girl sat up a little more straight at his words. He didn't sound ill. But that didn't always mean that someone wasn't sick. His look of complete confusion got to her, though. So he wasn't ill. To her complete surprise, she felt slightly hurt that he didn't think she was concerned with his health. That was different. She mentally shrugged it off to analyze later, or not, whatever felt more comfortable later. Most likely, she would be too afraid to think about this moment, but she'd convince herself this moment didn't matter. “I'm just curious because your usual friends aren't around and I don't suppose that means anything entirely good.” She looked at the lake and then added “Not to mention the fact that you've been acting really strange.”

If he’d been acting obnoxiously like he usually did, then Lily would have ignored him – walked past him as if nothing were happening and he didn’t exist. If he’d called out to her, made passes at her; would she have ignored him then? He was only trying to do what she was always yelling at him to do: leave her alone. She really needed to make up her mind. He sighed, snapping his book shut and shoving it into his bag as he turned to face her bodily – as it was apparent that she wasn’t going to leave any time soon.
He pushed his glasses up to sit on the bridge of his nose after they slipped down slightly. Hazel eyes stared at green ones as he tried to figure out what she was clearly thinking. Okay, if he were honest with himself, he could get lost in those eyes. They were gorgeous. More so than the emeralds they so resembled. He blinked, looking back out over at the lake. All he needed was for her to accuse him of something like staring or undressing her with his eyes. And that was painful to be accused, because he would never have done such a thing; regardless of how much a player he could be. His parents did raise him with some manners of respect.
He rolled his eyes, stretching out his back until it cracked in a pleasant way. “Sorry Evans, I wasn’t aware that going somewhere without my friends was a crime. Did the Headmaster make a new rule that Remus hasn’t informed me of? Let me guess, no wandering around by yourself? Because if so, that’s a violation of the friendship code we’ve got going on and I need to have a chat with him.” Of course he knew there was no such rule, because he was one of the first person to know of knew rules: whether by the Professor’s telling him what to do or by various other Prefects making sure he knew the rules. Either way, he needed to know the rules in order to break them.
He ran a hand through his hair – a nervous habit he had picked up. “Believe it or not Evans, you only know what I do with part of my time. You’d be surprised to learn that I don’t always go looking for trouble. Or cause it for that.” He picked up a rock and threw it out into the water, watching as it landed in the water with a small ‘plop’, ripples branching out. The tip of a tentacle poked out at the epicenter, as if testing to see if there was anything else that would be following after the first rock.
He turned to look at her, cocking his head to the side lightly. “So how can I help you Evans? I haven’t bothered you lately… Haven’t pulled a prank yet… As far as I’m aware, I haven’t broken any rules. What does the prized Prefect of Gryffindor Tower want with me?”
