I'm pretty sure I got everything, Lily thought as she read and re-read the letter she had just finished writing. She'd asked how Petunia was, though Lily's sister didn't seem to care much about her these days. A list of things Lily needed from the turquoise shirt she'd forgotten to a copy of Macbeth were scrawled in tiny writing near the bottome. But mostly. Lily wanted to let her parents know that she was fine and she wanted to hear about things that were going on with them. While Lily hadn't gone into great detail about her now non-friendship with her former best friend, her parents knew enough to know that they weren't friends anymore and that something had upset her. She didn't want her parents to worry. The young Gryffindor student didn't want her mother and father caught up in the sort of childish politics between the houses and she definitely didn't want to have to explain what a mudblood was. That would make them feel just aweful. Still, Mr. and Mrs. Evans knew that something had happened, so Lily had done her best to explain that she'd lost a friend. Betrayal wasn't something Lily forgived easily if at all, and that's how she felt: betrayed.
In any case, the piece of parchment, marked with thin lines of black ink that formed the words she hoped would reassure her parents, looked finished. There was nothing else to add and hopefully her parents would send the play she asked for. She'd only recently finished A Midsummer Night's Dream from the muggle reading list she had seen on the table of their kitchen, obviously one of Petunia's things, and decided she wanted to explore Shakespeare a little further. Satisfied that there was nothing else to be done but send the letter, Lily quickly put it in an envelope, sealed it, and wrote her parents' names neatly on the front. She threw on her school cloak and headed for the Owlery.
She took her time selecting an owl and finally chose one that she thought wouldn't scare the bajeesus out of her parents. They might claim they'd been getting accustomed to owl mail, but Lily thought it still sort of spooked them when an owl showed up with a letter that had no address on it. Lily could have put an address if she thought it would make her parents feel better, but really, what could make someone feel better about an owl delivering mail? She doubted her parents even trusted the human mail man to always get the correct address. The thought of the look on the face of her parents almost made her chuckle. But she knew they liked to hear from her, so she didn't hesitate to attach the letter to the foot of an owl and send it on its way.
For a little while, Lily leaned on a window sill. She wasn't quite ready to leave yet but she didn't have anywhere else to be at the moment. All of her classes were through with for the day and she was ahead of schedule as far as homework went. Instead she just stayed with the owls for a little while, thinking it might be a good idea to get a pet. Maybe an owl so her parents would get used to seeing one in the day time, or maybe a cat. Lily liked cats, but she hadn't thought to take on the responsibility of taking care of one. Or maybe she was just afraid Petunia might try to do something to it just because they weren't getting along right now.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] IM BULLETPROOF NOTHIN TO LOSE FIRE AWAY FIRE AWAY Olivia Quinn Harte strode through the halls of Hogwarts castle with a parchment scroll held firmly in her grip. She intended to take the letter up to the owlery and send it off with her tawny owl, whom she affectionately named Nitwit. The bloody thing was impossible to find, but she was pretty sure the owl was hiding up in the owlery, away from her prying hands. Olivia was in a relatively nonchalant mood, but the constant frown on her face suggested otherwise. In her hand was a note which she had previously written and sealed in her dormitory in the Slytherin common room, away from any nosy eyes. She took particular caution to write her letters in secret when the recipient of her letter was a very dangerous individual. That individual was her own brother, Alfie.
Liv and her brother had always shared a close relationship. He was already graduated from Hogwarts, but he was a fellow Slytherin like Liv and they thoroughly enjoyed making fun of their older brother who was a Ravenclaw know-it-all. What made Alfie so dangerous was that a year after graduating from Hogwarts he ran away to join "more powerful wizards", but the family saw through this and understood that to mean Voldemort and his death eaters. Alfie was considered a disgrace to the family, as they did not believe in pure-blood elitism, but Liv always tried to keep their letters back and forth going. Not because she wanted to join him or anything, but because they always had that close relationship. However, having a brother as an up-and-coming death eater was a risky business when you wanted to send letters to him. Liv was on the verge of expulsion as it was with all of the trouble she caused, she didn't need yet one more thing getting her in trouble with Headmaster Dumbledore, and so her knuckles were firmly gripped around the letter in her hand.
She strode up to the owlery, imagining it wouldn't be a particularly busy time to find her owl. She pulled her cloak closer to her body as she emerged out into the cold winter air. Bloody freezing... she quietly crumbled under her breath as she made her way up the stairs. She reached the landing only to find that she would not be alone in the owlery this evening. There was Lily Evans. Vile creature she was, that Evans, Liv thought. That goody-good smarty pants prefect! Barf! Perhaps there was a tinge of jealousy within Liv, which she would never admit, because her own grades were just kind of so-so and Lily was the top of every class. Olivia released her grip on her robes as she entered the owlery, staring at the Gryffindor girl with a particularly mischievous glint in her deadly green eyes.
Ah, Evans, I see you've finally found your true place at Hogwarts... among the owl droppings, Liv sneered rudely, suddenly her usual frown becoming an evil grin. Liv's eyes began to navigate all around her, from owl to owl, in search of her tawny one, Nitwit. The small bloody thing was nowhere she could see until--- ah, there it was. Hiding behind another much larger owl. The poor creature emitted a terrified hoot as Liv approached. C'mere Nitwit, you miserable little creature, she said, aggressively grabbing its foot and tying her letter tightly to it. she was bound to receive some hell from Lily over her border-line animal abuse, but Liv didn't care. If it sparked a conflict, all the better. Liv couldn't get enough of those.

Maybe Petunia would write to her this time. Lily knew better than to get her hopes up, but it would have been nice to actually hear from her sister. It had been so long since she and her sister had been close and Lily missed it. Sometimes she felt like that little girl again who was so recently hurt that her older sister suddenly didn't care about her. She almost hoped that once she graduated from Hogwarts things would go back to normal for them, but somewhere deep inside, Lily knew that wasn't going to happen. Oh, she'd graduate and with top marks too she was sure. But she knew that her relationship with Petunia would never be the same. She gave a sigh as she looked out at the clear sky. Something was going to have to give. Lily didn't think she could keep living so estranged from her sister and she didn't like that it almost felt like a competition for their parents' affection. In Lily's mind there was no contest. Petunia had spent all of their childhood with their parents, while Lily had to uproot herself every year and come to Hogwarts. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing in Lily's mind, she loved Hogwarts. She loved her friends and the classes and that she was given a little bit of freedom. But how could she even start to compare to Petunia when she spent so much time away from the muggle world? Sure, their parents were proud of Lily, but she was also certain that they'd had lovely things to say about their other daughter as well.
Lily didn't know how long she'd been standing there, but she was thinking it was about time she start walking somewhere else. She was just thinking that it had at least given her a peaceful thought to think when she heard a female voice. She decided that she'd had that thought just a little too soon. Lily knew the girl, or at least knew of her. She realized one couldn't say they really knew each other since the two hadn't spoken much. Lily didn't hate the girl, but she didn't like the Slytherin either. There was just no way that they weren't going to come into contact with each other, though. They were in the same year and both involved in extra-curricular activities (Lily being a Prefect and in the Slug Club, and the other girl being on the Slytherin Quidditch team, though Lily didn't always follow the game very closely).
“It's so very nice to see you too, Olivia.” The words themselves were nice enough, but Lily's voice actually dripped with sarcasm. Lily knew how to be sarcastic, but she usually only reserved that for teasing with friends. She even had very rarely used the tone with Severus even since he'd betrayed her. But Lily didn't take low shots against herself lightly. She would retaliate if she really needed to. Her eyes widened with Olivia's treatment of her owl and Lily made a mental note to see if she could find it later and bring it some sort of treat. It definitely needed a reward to have to put up with animal abuse. She was also already running through a list of professors she thought she could tell. Professor Slughorn maybe. She was in the Slug Club and one of his favorite students. “You know, you really shouldn't treat your owl like that. I doubt you'd like it if someone treated you like that.” She knew saying anything to her could be potentially dangerous, bu she couldn't sit back and watch the poor thing suffer like that. She'd always stood up for people she thought were being mistreated, and she was going to do the same for animals.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] IM BULLETPROOF NOTHIN TO LOSE FIRE AWAY FIRE AWAY Liv rolled her eyes unenthusiastically at Lily's sarcasm, or rather, what Liv thought was a sorry attempt for sarcasm. The Gryffindor girl was just way too pleasant for her liking. Yes, well, the feeling isn't mutual Evans, Liv sneered back as if she hadn't noticed Lily's sarcasm. She had of course noticed it, but she didn't want Lily to know that. Liv had made every effort to make goody two shoeses like Lily Evans and others like her know that any attempt they could ever possibly make to stand up to Liv would be shut down. She was meaner, tougher, or so she thought in her own mind anyway. What she didn't seem to comprehend was that people would never stop standing up for what they believed was right. Liv would try and and shut them down every time no matter how futile her attempts were.
As Liv fussed with the owl, Lily interjected with a remark about her cruelty towards animals, just as Liv had suspected. She loved to lure people into her own maniacal traps. There was no way for the other person to know whether she might snap or not, but usually they could count on some kind of reaction as Liv was a ticking time bomb. As soon as the words left Lily's mouth Liv whipped her head around and shot her a dangerous glare. She said nothing to respond at first, she just squeezed the owl a little tighter and brought it over to a window next to where Lily was standing. Liv smiled an awful, threatening smile, and chucked the poor innocent creature out the window with more force than the tiny bird could handle. At first it started hurtling towards the earth. Liv didn't bother to look down to see if Nitwit made it or not, but sure enough the small bird began to regain control, flapping its wings rapidly (to get as far away from that owlery as possible, no doubt).
Liv could see the genuine concern on Lily's face and felt pleased with herself. What's the matter? Going to jump out after it to save it? Liv said in a snarky tone. She wanted to provoke a fight out of Lily, and she might just get it. Lily wasn't a hostile person by any means, but Olivia knew she wouldn't stand by and allow this sort of inhumane behavior to go on. Liv stuffed her hands in the pockets of her robes to let her hand rest upon her wand. No harm in being ready, she thought. she really should have channelled her psychopath behavior into the duelling club or something, she would probably get in a lot less trouble. but alas, here she was causing a confrontation up in the owlery for no good reason whatsoever. she thought she ought to provoke lily to actually take out her wand. it had been awhile since liv had sent someone to the hospital wing, and who better than a prefect, someone with the power to catch her wandering the grounds at night or something when she wasn't supposed to. yes, one less prefect around for a while would be good news indeed.
So ginger I don't have all day, Liv said pulling her wand out from her robes. She twirled it between her fingers in a way that she often did, just out of boredom, but in this particular situation it was much more threatening. Are you going to stand up in the face of adversary to do what's right?! she said this all in a very brave and triumphant mocking voice. That's what you Gryffindorks are all about isn't it? Camon then, if you're so brave why don't you try and teach me a lesson for treating my owl like that, she taunted with a mischievous grin on her lips.
