MCKINNON full name: Marlene Isobelle McKinnon canon or orginial: Canon age: 16 year: Sixth house: Gryffindor blood: Pure wand: 10 inches, unicorn hair, willow patronus: fox boggart: being told to that she’s worse than her sister erised: emerging as valedictorian birth place: Dublin, Ireland ------------------------------------------------- On the night of April 18th, Matthew and Elise McKinnon had their second child, Marlene McKinnon. And right then, they knew their family was complete. Two daughters, and a steady career for each of them – life couldn’t get better. Marlene had always been a quiet and shy child. Even as a young child, she always lose out to her older sister in fights. She always gave in. Not (always) because she was compassionate, no. But because she didn’t know how to fight back. She got picked on at school rather often, and she always ran to her sister for cover. Marlene always tried to fight back; she wanted to be as brave as her parents. But somehow, her attempts kept failing. With just a year difference between the sisters, Matthew and Elise always made sure their daughters were together. Almost as if they were twins. It was all going great, because Marlene had a good support system to help her if she gets picked on outside of school. But things started to take a turn – for the worse – when the sisters began attending Hogwarts. After a year of anticipating the ancient castle after her sister had started, Marlene finally got her turn. She had great troubles saying goodbye to her parents, and the only thing that consoled her was the fact that she’d have her sister with her, too. She boarded the Hogwarts Express, and ended up not being able to have proper conversations with anyone till she reached Hogwarts. As a result, as first years streamed in with the one or two friends they had made during the train ride to Hogwarts, she remained alone, shy and anxious as to which house she would be sorted into and unable to talk to anyone even though she wanted to be more sociable. Before she could muster up enough courage to even mumble an audible ‘Hi’ to the girl who stood beside her, her named was called, and Marlene made her way up to the Great Hall platform timidly. As soon as the sorting hat was placed on her, it roared ‘GRYFFINDOR!’ Which came as a great, great surprise to her, since the last thing Marlene had expected was to be sorted into the house of bravery. But Marlene was happy with her house – after all, both her parents and her sister were from the same house. As soon as the term began, Marlene discovered that she loved being in Hogwarts almost as much as she loved being at home. The warmth of the castle was welcoming, and she realised that she was smiling more. She was talking more. She was joking more. It all came as a surprise to both her and her sister, but Marlene was loving it. Over the years, Marlene remained the shy and quiet girl that she had always been, and was practically invisible to most people. Sometimes, she badly, badly wanted to say what's going on in her head. She wanted to talk more. But somehow, she always ended just shutting up and remaining silent. She did very well in her studies, and had a handful of friends whom she was very loyal to. She had even begun being a little more brave, standing up to anyone who bullies her or her friends. It was the strong loyalty to her friends that basically fuelled her ability to hex anyone who harmed them. But the relationship between her and her sister became a little more strained. For some reason, Marlene and her sister were silently competing with each other. Marlene had always looked up to her sister, had always wanted to be just like her. So much so that she had begun to compete with her. She had never really talked to anyone about it, but subconsciously, she was always comparing her results with her sister, never mind that she was a year young than her sister. She was done with losing out - she wanted to be the better one. And now, in her sixth year, she was still as shy as ever. Some even say she’s socially awkward, and honestly, Marlene couldn’t disagree with them. She did have troubles starting conversations, especially in a large group. But she had come far from her days of being unable to fight for herself. Over the years, she had realised that she did indeed belong in Gryffindor. Perhaps having being sorted into Gryffindor had made her brave enough to fight for herself, to be independent. She might be shy, she might not talk much, but she was a fighter. Her downfall was that, she still competed with her sister, determined to achieve better grades than what her sister did in her sixth year. It scared her, how much she can obsess over tiny details, how much she wanted to be someone else, how much she wanted to be the best of the best sometimes. However much Marlene tried not to be so competitive, there was just something in the back of her mind that kept telling her to do much, much better than her sister. Something that was convincing her that she needn’t be like her sister – she could be MUCH better than her. |

Marlene McKinnon was slowly looking around her room, doing a final check. She couldn't be sending owls back home to ask her parents to send her anything that she'd left behind, they'd have her head. 'How can you be so irresponsible!', she could almost hear them say. They could never stand anyone not taking responsibility for their own belongings and actions. Sometimes, Marlene thought that they were a little too dramatic in terms of their expectations. Still, she forgave them because they were the best parents she could ever ask for.
Finally, when she was very, very sure that she had taken everything she had needed, she slowly started to push her trunk down the stairs, slowly so that the heavy trunk doesn't crash down all the way to the living room. With much difficulty, she managed to heave the trunk to the doorstep, where her parents were waiting for her. "Ah, finally! Come on, dear. We're running late!", her mother, Elise, hurried her. "There is only so much of weight I can carry, Mum", Marlene sighed, looking pointedly at the trunk. Her father, Matthew, chuckled as he carried the trunk swiftly. "There, I'll carry it to the car. Now please hurry up!", he rushed her as he walked towards the car with the trunk in his hand. Marlene walked towards the car, making sure to pick her cat Leo's cage up on the way. But before she could reach the front of the car, she felt someone pushing her aside.
“Hurry up!” her older sister, shouted as she pushed her sister aside to get to the car on time. Marlene rolled her eyes. “Can’t you see I was already doing so before you so rudely pushed me aside,” she mumbled, and took her seat behind with her mother. As usual, the two sisters were not in great terms.
Marlene was on her way to King's Cross station, to get to Platform 9 ¾ and board the Hogwarts Express. She wasn't exactly sure how she was feeling about starting her sixth year at Hogwarts right then, as the engine of the car purred to life and her father started driving towards the station. Not that she hated Hogwarts, no. She loved that ancient castle that has been her second home, where she had found a bunch of friends who she loved hanging out with. But with a dark power that was rising and terrorizing both the Wizarding and Muggle world, she wasn't too sure about looking forward to an exciting yet safe year at Hogwarts. Her parents being Aurors wasn't helping either, since now she has to spend every minute she spent at Hogwarts worried about their well-being.
Finally, they made it to the Platform in time, and she turned to say her goodbyes to her parents as the whistle blew. “Marlene, be careful, don't get into too much of trouble, and the two of you take care of each other, alright?” her mother said before engulfing her in a hug. Marlene smiled and nodded. “I will. And please, you take care too, mum. And dad,” she hugged her father, and boarded the train with her sister before the scarlet train started pulling away. With a final wave of her hand, and another wave at her sister, Marlene walked into her train, searching for her bunch of friends. Finally finding the compartment where her close friends were sitting, and apparently sharing their rather excited stories of their respective summers, Marlene eventually joined them after a few minutes of just listening to her friends, awaiting a rather adventurous year at the ancient castle.
